Scientific coordination is essential to advancing the field of ocean acidification, ensuring that data are comparable, methods are harmonized, and resources are used effectively. Since its foundation, the OA-ICC has played a key role in facilitating ocean acidification science on the international stage with our partners. This work continues to be essential as ocean acidification science advances and becomes increasingly complex. Researchers are moving from studying the impacts of acidification from single species to ecosystems, and to considering ocean acidification together with other environmental pressures, such as ocean warming, oxygen loss, and pollution.
The OA-ICC engages ocean acidification scientists and facilitates research through the following activities:
- Supporting international collaboration through the Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) and the UN Ocean Decade Ocean Acidification Research for Sustainability (OARS) Programme.
- Developing best practices and standardized methodologies to promote comparable research results.
- Providing online open access to ocean acidification data resources: a bibliographic database and a compilation of ocean acidification experimental data.
- Assessing socio-economic impacts to support mitigation and adaptation strategies.
- Developing applied nuclear and isotopic techniques to study ocean acidification impacts in the IAEA Radioecology Laboratories in Monaco.
