Algeria is hosting a side event to emphasize the need for remediating past nuclear test sites in its southern regions as an essential component of national broader efforts for socio-economic development and the attainment of SDG’s over the country. The new step towards remediation follows the recommendation by the 2005 IAEA report on “Radiological Conditions at the Former Nuclear Test Sites in Algeria” which suggested taking remediation measures “if the economic conditions change in the area”. During this side-event, a documentary screening will showcase progress made by Algeria in this area including in mitigating residual radioactive contamination, addressing related human and animal health challenges, managing environmental remediation particularly of underground water and surface water, preserving fauna and flora and safeguarding local population. A multidisciplinary panel discussion with the participation of academia, scientists and diplomats will follow to elaborate on exploring related short and long-term impact and propose elements for forward-looking remediation and post-remediation strategies and processes. This event is organized by Algeria.

SMR will play an important role in the near future in the development of nuclear energy as part of the global ambition to achieve net zero carbon emissions. But more traditional large-scale NPP often look more attractive to End-Users. A wide range of application of SMRs, their offshore and onshore deployment, shorter construction time and lower capital costs are compensated by significantly higher capacity and lower cost per MW of Large-Scale NPP. Discussion of the latest trends in the production and deployment of SMRs and large-scale NPP is an important step in the development of nuclear industry. This event is organized by the Russian Federation.
