    Description

    The Safety Requirements publication Preparedness and Response for a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency (IAEA Safety Standards Series No. GSR Part 7) requires governments to ensure that arrangements are made for the termination of a nuclear or radiological emergency, taking into account the need for a resumption of social and economic activity.

    Experience shows that this topic needs to be addressed by countries during the preparedness stage. In order to provide guidance and recommendations to Member States for preparing arrangements for dealing with the challenges associated with the termination of a nuclear or radiological emergency and the transition to the ‘new normality’ (i.e. the situation compared with the situation before the emergency) which may involve a long-term recovery process, the IAEA Safety Standards Series No. GSG-11, Arrangements for the Termination of a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency, was published in 2018 in joint sponsorship by 10 international organizations.

    The webinar is the second one in the set of webinars on arrangements for the termination of a nuclear or radiological emergency. The purpose of this webinar is:

    1. To present and discuss the emergency response to the representative cases of past emergencies;
    2. To analyze these emergencies in the context of transitioning to a planned exposure situation or an existing exposure situation.

    The Case Studies are not an assessment of the emergency response to the emergencies but an illustration of the applicability of the guidance provided in IAEA Safety Standards Series No. GSG-11.
