C.2. Enhancing the safety assessment capability and oversight of nuclear installations

The IAEA from 2014 to 2017 conducted a project to enhance the technical capability of the regulatory body in assessing safety. An integrated risk-informed decision-making process based on a comprehensive understanding of fundamental safety principles and safety assessment methods is a key part of such capability to assess safety.

The project aimed to strengthen regulatory staff competence by fostering a higher level of understanding of the technical and scientific principles involved in the evaluation of nuclear safety, taking into account lessons learned from the 2011 accident at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant in Japan. It included a tailored training programme developed using ?the Safety Assessment Education and Training syllabus ?and extensive training activities focused on developing deterministic and probabilistic safety assessment capacity in ?the Jordanian Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission ?and the Jordanian Atomic Energy Commission. The project also included support in the development of a sustainable safety assessment capacity building framework.

    Outcomes

    • Enhanced technical competency in safety assessment for regulatory body of the recipient country.
    • Improved understanding of safety principles and safety assessment methods to support risk informed decision making.

Beneficiary Countries: Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (primary beneficiary), the international nuclear community at large and in particular countries that are embarking on nuclear power programmes.
