Educational Workshop on Regulatory Challenges in Small Modular Reactors

The Educational Workshop on Regulatory Challenges in Small Modular Reactors (SMR) will be hosted by the Government of the Republic of India through the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) in Mumbai, India, 9-13 December 2024. Participation will be in-person only and the presentations will be held in English.

Objectives

The purpose of the event is to share the challenges associated with regulation of small modular reactors?(SMRs) and approaches to overcoming them, including possible changes to regulatory requirements and?practices based on the common positions developed by the SMR Regulators' Forum.

Target Audience

The educational workshop is intended for the regulatory bodies of countries embarking on a nuclear power programme or countries considering expanding their nuclear power programmes and considering the deployment of SMRs in the medium term.

Topics

The following topics will be covered during the workshop:

• Introduction to the SMR Regulators’ Forum, its activities and outputs;
• Applicability of the IAEA Safety Standards to SMRs;
• Overview of SMR technologies;
• IAEA initiatives on SMR, including Nuclear Harmonization and Standardization Initiative (NHSI) collaborative work;
• Application of Defence-in-Depth and graded approach to SMRs;
• Emergency Planning Zone for SMRs;
• Licensing process challenges related to SMRs;
• Design and Safety Analysis for SMRs;
• Manufacturing, construction, commissioning and operation issues.

Participation and Registration

All persons wishing to participate in the event will have to be designated by an IAEA Member State or organizations that have been invited to attend.

In order to be designated by an invited IAEA Member State, participants are requested to send the Participation Form (Form A) to their competent national authority (e.g. Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Permanent Mission to the IAEA or National Atomic Energy Authority) for onward transmission to the IAEA by 11 October 2024. Participants who are members of an organization invited to attend are requested to send the Participation Form (Form A) through their organization to the IAEA by above deadline.

Selected participants will be informed in due course on the procedures to be followed with regard to administrative and financial matters.
