    Description

This Coordinated Research Project will promote the development of advanced algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies applied to radiation detection systems, with corresponding testing frameworks to improve the detection and analysis of nuclear and radioactive material out of regulatory control (MORC) and enhance the sustainability of nuclear security operations. The CRP will focus on algorithm development and systematic evaluation and enhancement of detection equipment capabilities, with particular emphasis on emerging and advanced technologies including AI, Internet of Things, computer vision, statistical models, and multithreaded systems. Key research outputs will include a library of open-access data for algorithm and AI model testing and benchmarking, comprehensive guidelines for selecting suitable AI techniques and evaluating algorithm performance, frameworks for ensuring transparency and explainability of AI model outputs, and recommendations on regulatory compliance for AI use in nuclear security. Through research coordination meetings, technical consultations, and expert missions, the project will build capacity in machine learning and AI across Member States while addressing critical challenges in operational burden, equipment reliability, and detection accuracy.
