The present status and future prospects of nuclear medicine tomography were the main topics of discussion. The purpose of the symposium was to share experience and information on new developments and clinical applications of two promising tomographic techniques: SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) and PET (positron emission tomography). SPECT is currently being used universally in clinical practice, while PET, orignally developed as a technique for research, has gradually moved from the research laboratory to the clinical environment. The significant differences in nuclear medicine capabilities, especially in tomography, between developed and developing countries were given particular attention at a panel discussion.
